This std had been drafted with full consultation with the international events industry. Australian industry was invited to attend a forum ealy this year (hosted by Stds Australia and facilitated by the SEA) where each attendee was able able to vote for or against Australia being actively engaged. This std makes no judgements calls on industry sector and or certification. You will however much like BS8901 be able to acheive compliance with 20121 by using accepted industry best practice guides, tools, consultants etc. This is a highly anticipated std with huge interest globally and much time taken to make as user friendly as possible. I suggest you perhaps look at industry resources for updates, linked in discussions led by Phil Cumming and the likes and other info on this std so as to answer some of your qu's Also use BS8901 as a ref pt. www.sustainable-event-alliance.com (look at the ISO 20121 pages)

Fascinating - how did the standard even eventuate without consultation with the events industry? It will certainly be an interesting read, I'm curious about major festivals compliance or best practice application (especially music) compared to business events. Is there a different standard or is it all one umbrella document? I suppose that question is what the stakeholders meeting is for. Pity I wont be in a position to attend.
I look forward to being updated on it, though.

International Standard (ISO 20121) "Sustainability in Event Management" Industry Stakeholder Meeting Thursday March 18, 3.30pm, 2010 Standards Australia Level 10, 20 Bridge St, Sydney 2000
The newly established Sustainable Event Alliance (Australia) on behalf of Standards Australia invites key stakeholders across the Australian events and meetings community to attend a forum to discuss active participation in the development of the ISO 20121 Sustainability in Event Management.
This invitation extends to all organisations involved in the production or support of events in Australia to include: Government, Business, Sporting, and Cultural sectors.
It is important to note that a working draft for the International Standard (ISO) 20121 Sustainability in Event Management has already been produced with no involvement from the Australian events community. Twenty countries are actively involved in the development process including New Zealand.
For our involvement to become an actuality the Australian events community has to be an active participant. This is your opportunity to recognise and to support this process.
We urge our industry to up take this opportunity, to attend this stakeholder forum and to support participation so as to demonstrate a need and a want for an Australian voice in this process. The 'British Standard 8901, Specification for a sustainable event management system with guidance for use' was published in 2007 and updated in 2009, and although providing a global baseline, was created specifically for the UK and did not impact us directly. It has however affected and effected much of the British industry setting new standard practices, raising awareness and expectations, setting benchmarks and greening the supply chain. .
Commonly upon new standards being released, aligned certifications and accreditation's, audit services and products enter the marketplace.
Therefore it is imperative the development of ISO 20121 considers and are inclusive of conditions that are unique to Australia. To date the working draft of ISO 20121 is in the majority, consistent with BS8901:2009.
